The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela (TCYOV) is one of the most important products of the orchestral academic programme of the Fundación Musical “Simón Bolívar” (Fundamusical Bolívar) - or as it is commonly known, el Sistema.

Fundamusical Bolívar currently involves 400,000 beneficiaries across Venezuela, in a system that includes more than 1550 music agrupation distributed in 286 academic centers. 75 percent of these children live below the poverty line.  "For the children that we work with, music is practically the only way to a dignified social destiny. Poverty means loneliness, sadness, anonymity. An orchestra means joy, motivation, teamwork, the aspiration to success." (José Antonio Abreu). Transcending its cultural role, Fundamusical Bolívar employs over 15,000 individuals whom talents and skills includes training in instrument-making, arts administration and news media.

The Orchestra is composed of over 200 young musicians, who are members of the Simón Bolívar music Conservatory, the Experimental University of the Arts (UNEARTE) and the different academies of the Sistema, all of them having received the most skilled and advanced artistic and technical training in their different instruments. In addition to its regular concert activity, the Orchestra is highly active in the field of music education.

This young orchestra, through its demanding and rigorous academic training and organization, displays an extraordinary level of accomplishment. The TCYOV plays regularly in Venezuela’s most important venues, and has appeared with the most prestigious conductors and soloists both from Venezuela and from abroad, such as Claudio Abbado, Simon Rattle, Gustavo Dudamel, Eugene Kohn, Eduardo Marturet, Yo-Yo Ma, Juan Diego Florez and Itzhak  Perlman.

With a vision that encompasses the Orchestra’s musical present and future, and inspired by the unique achievements of Fundamusical over the past three decades, the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is proud to develop its musical and artistic conception in order not just to attain musical excellence, but also to be an inspiration at large within the objectives and philosophy of Fundamusical.

The orchestra made its international debut 2010 with concerts at the Beethovenfest in Bonn, Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid and Royal Festival Hall in London.

In October 2012 the orchestra completed a second tour of Europe with concerts in Liechtenstein, Hamburg Laeiszhalle, Toulouse Halle aux Grains and Stavanger Konserthus. The Orchestra is conducted by the rising young Venezuelan conductor Christian Vásquez.
