Conductor Gustavo Gimeno

PROFILE

"Yesterday, a true conductor was born in the Concertgebouw" ―Het Parool

A sensational debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Spring 2014 left no doubt that in Amsterdam’s historic Concertgebouw hall a major conducting talent had been launched. In no time the charismatic Spaniard has been approached by leading orchestras world wide. In Spring 2014 Gimeno was appointed Principal Conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, taking up his post in 2015/16 season.
2014/15 season will see Gustavo Gimeno continue to make debuts with Deutsche Symphonie- Orchester Berlin, Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, the radio orchestras of Stuttgart and Hannover, Danish National Symphony and Stavanger Symphony. Soloists will include Boris Giltburg, Simon Trpceski and Nicolas Altstaedt. In Spring 2015 will make his debut for the Palau de les Arts in Valencia conducting a production of Norma.
In 2013/14 Gimeno made an extraordinary debut with Munich Philharmonic both for subscription and tour concerts with the soloists Katia Buniatishvili, piano, and soprano Anja Harteros. He also conducted Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Het Residentie Orkest, Orchestre G Verdi Milan, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, Orquesta de Valencia and Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE. He also made his debut in Japan with the Sendai Philharmonic and in Australia with Queensland Symphony.
Gustavo Gimeno’s international conducting career began in 2012 as assistant to Mariss Jansons with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He spent several insightful years assisting the late Claudio Abbado with the Orchestra Mozart, Bologna, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Mahler Chamber Orchestra. In 2013 he also assisted Bernard Haitink with the Orchestra Mozart. Working closely with such mentors has had a profound impact on the formative years of his conducting career.
Gustavo Gimeno has worked closely with many composers including Theo Loevendie, Jacob ter Veldhuis, Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös, and George Benjamin. In February 2014, on the occasion of his Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra debut Gimeno conducted the European debut of Magnus Lindberg’s second Piano Concerto with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and Yefim Bronfman, (its’ dedicatee), and with the Swedish Symphony Orchestra, and Tine Ting Helseth as soloist, he will conduct works of Britta Byström.
Gustavo Gimeno was born in Valencia, Spain, and lives with his family in Amsterdam. Between 2001 – 2013 he was Principal Percussionist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
